Bringing Soca to A Wider Audience : Meet Kittwani Oscar

“We measure your smile, and not your waistline” is the slogan for Kittness Dance Fitness Studio. Owner, Kittwani Oscar, says, “ I came up with it because I want women to feel confident when they work out. I encourage them to stop thinking about their body image or size and focus on having fun, enjoying the exercise, and dancing to great music. She started dancing as a member of the praise dance team.

Oscar moved to the US as a teen from The Commonwealth Of Dominica. As time went on, she soon transitioned to the American lifestyle. “It was a culture shock, but I got used to it as time passed.”

Caribbean island country Dominica is a small country in the Lesser Antilles.  The population is under 72,000, and Dominica is relative for its African and French influences. However, just like most Caribbean countries, Dominica has its connection to music and dance.  Oscar brings these elements to Kittness Dance Studio. “Soca is a Caribbean music genre that is an offshoot of Calypso, and if I had to describe it, I would describe it as a fun, colorful, rhythmic genre full of life and energy.”

She has always had an adoration for fitness. She has an associate’s degree in Physical Education and a bachelor’s in Health & Fitness Management. She had begun popping up at different events and venues teaching Soca fitness for four years. In 2018, Kittwani Oscar launched the Kittness Fitness Dance Studio location in Norcross, GA.   “I had a following and people interested in coming to a potential dance studio focusing on Afro-Caribbean dance fitness. “ says Kittwani.

Inclusivity is Kittwani Oscar's brand purpose.  She believes other entrepreneurs can display embracement by establishing a welcoming atmosphere in a judgment-free zone. The acceptance marks the beauty of wholeness—bringing together Caribbean and non-Caribbean through the sound of music and the feeling of movement once the Soca music comes on!

The courses are inspired by various Caribbean islands, including Saint Lucia, Guadeloupe, and Jamaica. Classes are both online and in-person!! Get your groove on!!

“Being a Caribbean American means that I am a part of a region and culture that stands for unity and takes an easygoing, energetic, and colorful approach to life.” - Kittwani Oscar, owner of Kittness Dance Fitness Studio.
